Christmas Challenges - 2007 to 2009

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

William was 5 and it was the first time he became really interested in Santa and his unbelievable capability of making things happen. He had been questioning both me and my husband for days regarding the details of Santa’s business.

We decided to do something extra to guard Santa’s secret. Instead of doing shopping with William, I managed to do it myself, and stashed the presents in a deep closet, covered.

All went well and it was Christmas eve. William went to bed with high expectations. We wrapped up the presents and staged evrything up - milk, cookies, chocolate footprints, note from Santa in strange handwriting…

William woke up early in the morning. With excitement, he ran into our room to report his findings. All worked well - at least it seemed.

Later that day, William came to me and whispered “Mommy, did santa really bought those presents for me?”

“What? Yes, of course! Wasn’t he nice?” I tried to hide my surprise.

‘Mommy, I don’t think he did - I think he stole the presents from our closet!”

“What? Why would you think that?”

‘Yes! I saw the presents in our closet. You and daddy bought those - I have been checking them every day… and I checked Santa’s presents - they’re exactly the same!”

“… …”

That took a lot of explanation to keep santa alive.

William was 6 and the battle continued. It appeared that he had this battle in his own mind - on one hand, he wanted Santa to be true, on the other hand he was having a hard time to believe the whole thing.

And, with his reach into the world ever growing, so was the challenge…

“Daddy, can I ask you something?”

“Sure!”

“Why do some parents lie to their kids?”

“What do you mean?”

“Yes! I saw it on TV! The parent bought presents from WalMart and then sneaked into their kids’ room and pretend the presents were from Santa…”

“Well… I can’t believe they would do that! Why would the TV showing parents lying?” Daddy seemed truly shocked.

“Yeah, TVs are terrible! But… do all parents do that… lying to their kids about santa… DO YOU DO THAT TO ME?”

“NOOOO! I would never do that! Why would you think I would lie to you?! You see, not everything on TV is correct 0 they just show that because they want people to buy their stuff… so they can make money… Do you remember they showed those fish cookies talking? Well, that is not true and you know that!”

“You’re right daddy… TVs are not good… But why did those parents lie to their kids?”

“Well, it could be that their kids didn’t behave and they knew they would jsut get coal from santa… so to make their kids feel better, they decided to spend thie own money and buy the present!” Dadday finally figured out the truth.

William was 7. he had been reading a lot about Santa and the North pole. And the inner battle continued…

“Daddy… can you sleep with me on Christmas eve?”

‘Why? I can’t believe you are 7 years old and you still want to sleep with daddy!”

“No, I just want to make sure you don’t sneak to the Christmas tree and put presents there…” He grinned.

“Why in the world would I ever want to do that? You always get nice presents from him… why would I spend my own money? Plus, I checked all the stores, the stuff you want is not sold anywhere…”

Daddy was right. William wanted a blue Bakugan Sphere. The otehr evening, I received a stress call from Daddy.

“Hi… I need to talk to William… the Bukusphere thing… Can you ask him whether a red one would do if Santa doesn’t have a blue one? I checked everything where, they have plenty of red and black ones, but not blue… even the online stores were out of stock…”

“But how should I ask him? He is already suspicious…”

“ehh… how about tell him I heard this rumor… well, can you put him on the speaker phone?”

I gladly did.

“Daddy? Where are you? Why are you late tonight?”

‘Ehh.. I am at work… You won’t believe this… Everyone at my workplace is crazy rearranging their kids’ Christmas wishes… did you see the big storm on TV? There is a big storm this year, and there is a rumor that Santa may not get all his presents he needs…”

“What are you talking about Daddy?” William asked - that was my question as well…

“Your wish list! That means Santa may not be able to get the blue Bakusphere you wished… To be safe… and nice, it’s better to give Santa a second choice… Let’s say Santa doesn’t have a blue one for you, what color would you pick - black or red? The red ones look really nice to me…” I could almost see hope glowing in daddy’s eyes.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Daddy… Santa ALWAYS gets what he needs - he MAKES things and he always has enough for everyone becasue he has all the elfs working for him all year long!!”

“But… I don’t know… It’s better to be safe… What if for some reason he only has red and black - do you rather pick one or have nothing?”

“Well Santa SHOULD have blue ones; and that’s what I really wished for. If he doesn’t give me a blue one, then I don’t think he is real!!!” Daddy went silent… or was the cell phone signal?

So the search continued… and long story short - daddy finally found one -the very last one - blue bakusphere at one of the last stores on earth. We both jumped like children…

Now everything is in daddy’s trunk, covered nicely with a car cover, waiting for stage time.

Yes, Daddy will be sleeping with William on Christmas eve; but before doing that he would make him REALLY tied so that once he is in sleep no one can wake him up - not even Santa! Ho! Ho! Ho!!!
